Theme of the Week – Alice in Wonderland

Theme of the Week is a post where we ask readers like you to comment with ideas for a particular theme. What ideas and suggestions do you have? What game, craft, apparel choice, theme meal, evening activity, special event, song, skit, or anything else would you do at camp if your theme was…

Alice in Wonderland (Down the Rabbit Hole)

As always I will kick off the theme with five suggestions. Then it’s your turn to leave your awesome suggestions and ideas in the comments area below.

I took the following ideas from the wonderful site  Alice-in-Wonderland.net, where you will find many more ideas.

  1. Have a Mad Hatter Tea Party and set up a long table, covered with all different kinds of teapots, mismatched teacups and saucers, chandeliers, etc. Have an assortment of ‘odd’ chairs around the table, so that people have to sit at different heights. Use a colorful tablecloth.
  2. Hang up signs with ‘this way’, ‘that way’, ‘up’, ‘down’, etc. painted on them, like in Disney’s Tulgey wood.
  3. Play lawn croquet: with hedgehog plush toys as balls, or perhaps hedgehogs painted on the balls. Attach colored and stuffed socks to the end of the mallets and sew on eyes, to represent flamingos, or use a plush flamingo. Create large cardboard playing cards for the arches.
  4. Make teams, put a bucket (or large teapot) with tea on one side and an empty one on the other side of a course. Your guests have to fill a teacup, run to the other side (with the cup in their hands, or balancing them on their heads…), and empty the cup there. The team that has filled the bucket first wins.
  5. Have your camp staff wear top-hats or rabbit ears.

  • If this were for children under 9yrs old, have a craft for painting flowers. Use tissue paper, different colored pipe cleaners, and craft paint. roll the tissue paper to make a flower head, push the pipe cleaner through the bottom from side-to-side then hook it around itself. Have the kids platter the paint on the head with multiple colors.

  • I have a few ideas i hope you like…
1)make a sock animal – white rabbit, or cheshire cat,
2)clay or ceramic or play doh tea pot or cup and saucer
3)clay or ceramic hand held mirror – through the looking glass,
4)a scavenger hunt – the white rabbit, the dormouse, the cheshire cat, the keys and keyholes, and the flowers ,the queens crown, drink me potion, playing cards and so on.
5)get a life size chess set,
6)Relay race #1 – divide into two teams- set up 2 baby pools of water, and two tea party tables.empty the pool of tears into mad hatters tea party,
7)Relay #2 – make each team two large playing cards. put them on the ground in front of each other. hop from one to the other, turning around and picking a card to put it in front of you.
8)make a maze – use rabbit paw prints to mark your course,in many various directions with dead ends, use huge huge playing cards, or umbrellas as mushrooms, or cardboards clocks to block your paths and other items from the book to make it cooler and harder to find the right path.
9)an obstacle course – go down the rabbit hole, drink this- shrink and crawl thought something, eat this – and stomp through some water balloons,(tugley woods) – this way, and that way,up, down, and so on, fight your way through playing cards and so on,
10)you could watch one of the movies on the side of a building.

  • i have one more relay – you could take costume items like alice’s blue dress, the queens crown, the cats tail, the rabbits vest, and so on, put them at one end of the race, kids run to the clothes, put them all on run back to start and the next kid goes, this is funnier with big shoes, could maybe use the rabbits feet.
