Step 1: Set the Medieval Scene
This activity is great to play during a “Medieval Week” theme week (or day). On the day of the quest, gather all campers and introduce the theme. Create an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement by decorating the area with medieval-inspired banners and music.
Step 2: Crown Your Royalty
Select a Queen for the girls’ team and a King for the boys’ team from among the campers. Hold a crowning ceremony where they are adorned with crowns and capes and seated on thrones. These roles are crucial as the Queen and King will provide clues during the game.
Step 3: Unveil the Holy Grail
Present an ugly vase or other object you’ve chosen as the Holy Grail. Build a backstory about its ancient origins, immense value, and mysterious disappearance within the campgrounds. This will be the sought-after relic in the quest.
Step 4: Divide into Teams and Explain the Rules
Split the campers into two teams, boys and girls. Specify the boundaries and explain the rules clearly. Each team should appoint a head knight who will be the only one who can interact directly with their respective monarch to ask yes-or-no questions about the Grail’s location.
Step 5: Strategize and Seek
The Queen and King know the Grail’s location and will answer the head knights’ questions. Teams must come up with effective questions that will lead them to the Grail. Only one question may be asked at a time. Boys cannot hear the girls’ questions and vice versa. After each question, the team must rush to where they think the Holy Grail is hidden. If it’s not there, they may return to ask another yes or no question.
Step 6: Monitor and Maintain Order
Staff members should be assigned to monitor the game’s boundaries, ensure the campers’ safety, and assist the royalty in managing the head knights. One staff member should be assigned to the Queen and one to the King to ensure the knights are following the rules. It’s essential to keep the game fair and fun for all participants.
Step 7: Award the Victorious Team
Once a team successfully locates the Holy Grail, celebrate their victory with a small ceremony. Award them bragging rights and perhaps a small token to commemorate their victory.
Gather your crowns and capes, and prepare for a day of royal quests and legendary tales! The game can last for 30 minutes or more depending on how hard you hide the Holy Grail and how well each team works together.
