Backyard Baseball (Kickball)

Welcome to Backyard Kickball! This is kickball with SUPERPOWERS!

We played this game with 3rd graders and up. With older kids, this game is absolutely insane!

This twisty game we created is based on the old classic computer game, Backyard Baseball. In the computer game, both teams would be awarded powerups; special bats, special pitches, unique plays (the classic Undergrounder…), etc.  In this game, each team receives power-ups for their team to use… in a “regular” game of Kickball. it gets really wacky and hilarious, especially once the campers get the hang of it. the powerups really start flowing and you wind up with incredibly zany combinations.

The group will be split into two groups per team. (In order to accommodate multiple bunks, we put four bunks in the game at once.) Two bunks were on each team. One will play and the other will earn POWERUPS.

Every Inning, the halves of the team switch: the former players earn powerups, and the powerup-earners play Kickball.) Some Powerups are defensive, and some handicap the other team!

Along the first base side is the batting team and along the third base side is the fielding team. Alongside the baseline is a basketball hoop, and a foul line we spray painted on the grass. Shots are only valid from behind the line. Every 5 baskets scored earns the team a powerup.

Powerups are earned in order on the sign and must be used in the inning they are earned. They can only be used once per time they are earned… and they last the duration of ONE PLAY ONLY…so use them wisely!

When a powerup is earned, a designated staff member puts a Velcro card next to the next powerup on the list. When it’s used, he takes it off. (it’s possible to do this part slightly more high-tech.)

(We used specialty staff to man the hoops and the powerup lists; making sure shots went in, that they were shot from behind the line, that the powerups earned and used were updated, etc.  to keep things organized.)

Once the inning is over, teams switch, and the earning team kicks and the kicking team earns powerups.

Powerups include:
