Theme of the Week – Gettin’ Dirty

Theme of the Week is a post where we ask readers like you to comment with ideas for a particular theme. What ideas and suggestions do you have? What game, craft, apparel choice, theme meal, evening activity, special event, song, skit, or anything else would you do at camp if your theme was…

Gettin’ Dirty

Below are five ideas. Leave your suggestions in the comments area below.

  1. Use the hoses to create some mud pits and hold a camp Mud Run.
  2. Make Oreo Dirt Cups.
  3. Have staff play Bull in the Ring while the campers cheer for them. Bull in the Ring is played in a roped off muddy area. Participants start on all fours. When the whistle blows participants try to push the others out of the ring. They cannot stand up, remaining on their knees at all times. The last person left is the Bull in the Ring.
  4. Hold a tug-of-war over a mud pit.
  5. Do some gardening – or at least search for worms.

  • we did a great messy night at camp one summer. we had a slip-n-slide where they got covered in shaving cream and goop, they had to shave a balloon covered in shaving cream (and the counselor always made sure it popped), we did a pudding drop (campers lay flat on a tarp while their team mate drops pudding into their mouths…yes, it’s werid but funny) there was a kiddie pool full of mud that they had to reach into to find a treasure…all kinds of stuff. the kids (and staff) loved it

  • sorry this is a late response but we had a messy week last summer and we had a blast. we had some expired cupcakes that were green so we put them on the backfield and our kids had to roll and try to get them to stick to them. we did shaving cream hair-dos. we filled our slip ‘n’ slide water hole with jell-o. we had them dig through oatmeal with their toes to find puzzle pieces and the first team to put their puzzle together won. we filled pantyhose with pudding and threw them at each other. we covered the boys with shaving cream on their legs and arms and the girls chased them around with the squirt guns and tried to get them off. the bigget hit…on friday, we put EVERYTHING we had left on the backfield gave them 20 minutes with card board to make some kind of shields or things to hide behind and then it was a free for all! it was a blast!

  • we had them bring clothes on monday of that week and when we finished each day, we hosed the kids off, put their messy clothes on the back fence to dry overnight and the kids changed. it worked out well and at the end of the week many families just threw the nasty clothes away.

they were not allowed to participate without these “messy clothes”

  • Sorry to come in so late! MESSY TWISTER – get large old sheets, use WASHABLE paint to make a twister board, each cabin has gets a “board” and a caller spins the twister wheel and kids play twister in paint. Have hose nearby to hose off when done!
