Theme of the Week- Construction

Theme of the Week is a post where we ask readers like you to comment with ideas for a particular theme. What ideas and suggestions do you have? What game, craft, apparel choice, theme meal, evening activity, special event, song, skit, or anything else would you do at camp if your theme was…

Here are my five suggestions. Leave yours in the comments area below.

  1. Give each group blueprints on a structure and then have them build it out of Legos or Kinex.
  2. Have older campers construct a camp project, like a recycling center, a needed fence or some teambuilding equipment (like an all aboard platform).
  3. Have a construction job board. When the construction whistle blows teams race to the board and grab a project. Each project is worth a certain amount of points depending on the difficulty of the project. Some teams may want to tackle a hard project for more points. Another team might opt to finish as many easy projects as they can.
  4. If you have a tractor or a large construction vehicle, give rides to the campers.
  5. Let campers have fun with remote control construction vehicles.

  • A fun drink to have for the kids is Electric Juice. You take Koolaid & Pop rocks. First put a little bit of poprocks in the bottom of a cup. Then when you fill the cup with Koolaid the rocks start to fizz. The kids think its really Electric. It was a hit when we did this for a VBS camp.

  • Box City –

hold a “town meeting” to discuss all the different needs and parts of a community – what types of buildings do you find in a city? What other parts of a city require construction (roads, utilities, parks etc). Different types of communities: agricultural, rural, suburban, urban etc, how are they similar, how are they different?Have kids decide what they want in their city and using boxes, roll paper and other art supplies, construct a box city.
