Quest for the Holy Grail

Here’s a competition/event campers will really enjoy. It’s called Quest for the Holy Grail.

This is a perfect activity for a Medieval week.

PREP WORK

Find a really ugly vase or an old-looking cup. Take a picture of it. Hide it somewhere at camp. It could be buried, locked away, or hidden in plain sight.

THE QUEEN AND KING

Gather the campers outside and crown a Queen of the girls’ team and a King of the boys’ team with crowns and capes (maybe even a scepter). If possible, seat them in special chairs (thrones).

THE HOLY GRAIL

Present the picture of the “Holy Grail”. Tell them it’s priceless and centuries old. Then let them know that somehow the Holy Grail was lost on campgrounds.

The two teams are to compete to find it. The reward? Bragging rights!

RULES AND BOUNDARIES

Lay out whatever rules you want for the “subjects” of the land. Specify any boundaries.

CHOOSE YOUR KNIGHTS

A team leader or head Knight must be picked for both teams. The Knights are the only two campers allowed to converse with the Royalty (Queen and King).

ASKING QUESTIONS

The Queen and King know where the vase or cup is hidden and the Knights must ask yes or no questions that can lead them to the Grail. The teams help the Knights to come up with good questions.

The boys do not hear the answers to the girls’ questions and vice versa.

THE QUEST BEGINS

Once the questions are answered the teams rush to where they think the Grail is hidden. If it is not found, they may ask another question. Only one question may be asked at a time. Specify a minimum time they must wait before asking another question (i.e. 3 minutes) so they don’t just hang around and ask multiple questions.

STAFF ROLES

The staff must monitor the grounds as the teams move about, as well as post a staff member with the Royalty to make sure the Knights are following the rules.

Your campers will have a blast! the game can last from about 30 minutes to over an hour. It all depends on how hard you hide the Grail and how well each team can work together.
