Here is a fun reward and recognition program.
STEP 1: Find a treasure chest.
This can be a small chest or a huge trunk.
Some neat boxes can be found at Hobby Lobby (make sure you go on the weeks they are 50% off). With the ones from Hobby Lobby you’ll have to attach your own hasp for a lock. You can find ones on Amazon that already have a hasp for a lock.

STEP 2: Fill the treasure chest.
Fill it with whatever prizes and goodies you want. Here are a few examples.
- Candy
- Snacks
- Dollar store items
- “Coupons” for special activities, sitting closest to the fire on skit night, getting in the dining hall first, sleeping in one morning, lunch with the camp director, etc.

STEP 3: Get a lock and a bunch of keys.
You can get lots of scrap keys on sites like Etsy or eBay. Then again, maybe your maintenance crew or public works team have old keys lying around.
STEP 4: Award keys to groups.
- Winning a game
- Being first at a meal or event
- Doing something helpful
- Full participation in an activity
- Completing a challenge
STEP 5: Let groups try their keys
Near the end of the week, schedule a time for the camp to get together. Play some fun music like a pirate shanty or the Mission Impossible theme. Then let groups come up one at a time to try their keys on the lock.
The group that opens the lock and gets whatever is inside.
Alternatively, you could have 5 – 10 boxes or more. Each box would have a different “prize”. The prize could be good, like snack items, or it could be bad, like dog treats.
Each group can send up a camper to try a key on all the locks. Before they open the lock, they can pass on the box and give it to another group (who has to accept it), or they can keep the box and surrender the rest of their keys. You want to make sure every group gets at least one box.
For those groups that got “bad” prizes, you can give them consolation treats.
