Theme of the Week – (Your State) Adventures

Theme of the Week is a post where we ask readers like you to comment with ideas for a particular theme. What ideas and suggestions do you have? What game, craft, apparel choice, theme meal, evening activity, special event, song, skit, or anything else would you do at camp if your theme was…

(Your State) Adventures

Since I (used to) live in California my 5 suggestions will be based on the theme – California Adventures.

Below are five ideas. Leave your suggestions in the comments area below.

  1. Play the camp-wide game, Gold Rush.
  2. The state animal is the Grizzly Bear. Have a counselor dress up in a bear costume and hide somewhere in or near camp. Then have a hunt for the California Grizzly Bear.
  3. Hold a field trip to the beach. Offer surfing lessons.
  4. Make it a travel camp and discover the state. In California you might visit orange fields, the Golden Gate Bridge, any beach, Hollywood, Venice, Disneyland, and Sea World.
  5. There is a strong Mexican influence in California so have a few meals highlighting some good Mexican food.

  • Any ideas for Texas…BTW Texas isn’t a prairie or desert (that’s a stereotype) so no suggestions regarding the wild west please.

    • Cassidy, Texas has so much to offer depending on what area you’re in. There’s great music venues, the Alamo, ranches, oil, cattle, aerospace industry, great collegiate and professional sports teams. Texas comes from the word Tejas which means friends so you can definitely play on that.

    • Arkansas?
      1. Hog Calling competition (Razorbacks)
      2. Fishing or competition with one of those magnetic fishing games
      3. WalMart was founded in Arkansas, so have an event where campers come on stage to play some Price is Right-esque pricing games.
      4. Duck Calling competition
      5. Pine Tree is the state tree, so if you have pine cones around do some pine cone tossing at targets.
      6. Scott Joplin (musician) was born in AR, so play some Ragtime piano music to give a special event some ambiance.
      7. The diamond is the official state gem. Buy a bunch of plastic diamond shaped gems from Oriental Trading, spread them around camp and hold a diamond search competition.
      8. Milk is the official state beverage. Make milk carton birdhouses during craft time, serve chocolate or strawberry milk during snack time, and/or have the campers do the Color Changing Milk experiment (Google it)
      9. Fiddle is the state instrument. Hold a square dance. Bring in a caller and a fiddle player (or group) and teach the campers and staff how to square dance.
      10. Honeybee is the official state insect. There are a ton of bee related crafts and activities online. Check Pinterest for ideas.
